Turning dreams into reality can feel daunting, especially when they're as ambitious as becoming a verified artist on Spotify. However, one of our clients managed to leap from never having written music to composing and releasing their first track on Spotify in just two months. Here's how they navigated through the essentials of music theory and composition to achieve this remarkable transformation.
Our client, although passionate about music, had only a basic background, having participated in choir during high school. Their aspiration was to compose instrumental music with a focus on video game soundtracks. To realize this dream, it was crucial they first grasped foundational music theory.
Despite having some prior knowledge, they lacked a thorough understanding of the basics. Drawing from my experience and extensive research, it's apparent that solidifying these fundamentals accelerates learning and development in music creation. Therefore, the client diligently completed our Easy Level one Music Theory course within the first two weeks. This course is also accessible for free on our YouTube channel.
**Essential Music Theory Completed by the Client:**
- **Rhythms, Notes, and Rests:** Whole notes, whole rests, half notes, half rests, quarter notes, quarter rests, and dotted half notes.
- **Musical Alphabet:** Understanding half steps, whole steps, and scales, focusing on C Major, G Major, A Natural Minor, and E Natural Minor.
- **Keys and Chords:** Basic knowledge of four keys and the six major and minor chords derived from the C major and G major scales.
The importance of these basics lies in their ability to make composing more intuitive and unlock creative potential.
After our client mastered the ABCs of music theory, it was time to implement this knowledge in practice. Early compositions were unsatisfactory—not resonating with the client’s creative vision. To address this, they engaged with the "Melody Machine" course, focusing on a pivotal concept: rhythm motifs.
This technique revolutionized their compositions by thinking of rhythms as patterns or motifs, similar to an alphabet of rhythms. By understanding how to structure these motifs, the client could align notes to create compelling musical phrases.
Examples of Rhythm Patterns:
- A (measure one) was given one rhythm.
- B (measure two) had a different rhythm.
- Patterns created include: ABAB, ABBA, AAAB, creating a foundational structure for melodic development.
Once comfortable with these motifs, the creative process blossomed, unlocking a new realm of composition and satisfaction.
Equipped with these techniques, our client composed 30 test pieces over four weeks, each employing the learned motifs and music theory. It was the 31st composition that stood out—it was a memorable piano piece that resonated with everyone who heard it, including family members and even my fiancé.
Following this success, we guided the client through the release process, and soon, their track was available across prominent streaming platforms: Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Pandora, and more.
This journey from beginner to verified artist underscores the power of mastery over the basics, strategic implementation, and high-paced, iterative practice. The client's story stands as testimony to the efficacy of structured learning and dedicated practice, paving the way for aspiring musicians to achieve their creative dreams.
